At airports, the single greatest cause of injuries is from manual baggage handling.
Such injuries, as well as causing hardship to the affected individuals, cost the industry much through increased sickness absence and reduced productivity.
EU directives, including guidelines for conditions when manual handling of goods risks to cause injuries, specially in the back, is regulated in EU directive 90/269/EEG.
Up to now, these directives have, at many airports, not been followed with recpect to ergonomic design of operators´ working places.
Within a near future, the demands on companies to follow these directives will certainly increase.
