Rally driver and TV presenter Penny Mallory will open the new £10 million centre at Edinburgh Airport, which brings together all of the airport's car rental companies under one roof.

Built by Keir Group, the development is part of a planned £100 million investment by Edinburgh Airport over the next five years.

A covered walkway links the new centre, one of the largest of its kind in the UK, to Edinburgh’s main terminal.

The centre also includes a new car rental pick up and return area, conveniently located next to the Hilton Hotel.

Penny Mallory will be joined by Edinburgh West MP John Barrett and airport Managing Director Gordon Dewar at the official opening.

Mr Dewar said: “This £10 million investment is part of our ongoing transformation of Scotland’s capital airport. It will provide a one stop shop for passengers, bringing together the many car rental companies based at Edinburgh Airport under one roof. For passengers, it will mean a more efficient, seamless service.”

Meanwhile, work is progressing on a £41 million departure lounge extension at the airport, with the first phase set to open to passengers in November. The development will offer more space to relax, a wider choice of bars, shops and restaurants and a new purpose built security search area.

Almost 20 new services to Spain, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Denmark, France, Germany and Greece are set to take off from Edinburgh this year, boosting business and leisure opportunities. The new services include Bologna, Palma, Rome Ciampino, Copenhagen, Zadar (Croatia), Sardinia, Venice and Dusseldorf.

Mr Dewar added: “These are exciting times for Scotland’s busiest airport. With almost 20 new routes already confirmed and more in the pipeline, Edinburgh Airport now serves more destinations than at any time in its history, connecting Scotland with Europe, North America and North Africa. Our substantial and ongoing investment in the airport will help position Edinburgh as a world class business and leisure destination, with an airport that rivals Europe’s best regional gateways.”
