Electra is pleased to announce the acquisition of more than 340 Iveco glider chassis and 700 pallets of stock from a company that has recently gone into administration. While saddened to see a fellow innovator face difficulties, Electra acknowledges their contribution to the shared goal of producing zero-emission vehicles, paving the way for a cleaner future.
Electra’s Vision for Efficient, Scalable Production
This acquisition allows Electra to integrate these vehicles seamlessly into its existing production processes, with the ambitious goal of building these smaller electric trucks in as little as two days. By leveraging its proven EV drivetrain kits, Electra will transform these chassis into fully functional electric trucks, further enhancing its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and reducing emissions. The company has grown from its origins in a small, cramped facility to thriving in a competitive market where many others have struggled, with numerous start-ups unable to survive the challenges of the electric vehicle industry.
Challenges and Opportunities in the EV Truck Market
Ben Smith, Managing Director of Electra, noted that the chassis purchased include 7.5-tonne and 8-tonne models, which present unique challenges due to their limited payload capacities. Smith suggested that this might have been one of the factors contributing to the difficulties encountered by the previous owner. However, Electra sees a clear opportunity to optimise these trucks to a gross vehicle weight that will make them viable for a wide range of sectors, opening new doors in both the UK and European markets.
“Nearly 200 of these trucks are left-hand drive, making them ideal for distribution across Europe,” Smith added. “The challenge now is to optimise their performance and payload to ensure they work effectively for our customers.”
The trucks acquired are OEM chassis that were built without their engines + gearboxes. For most companies, this would pose a significant challenge in terms of usability—few have the expertise or infrastructure to repurpose these vehicles. However, with Electra’s 7-year track record of electrifying chassis, the company saw an opportunity to prevent these trucks from being scrapped. By integrating Electra’s specialised EV drive systems, these vehicles will not only avoid waste but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
Strategic Acquisition Marks Continued Growth for Electra
This acquisition is more than just an addition to Electra’s inventory. It signifies the company’s commitment to organic growth, smart resource use, and its role as a leader in advancing the electric vehicle industry. Electra remains dedicated to building simple, efficient, and affordable electric trucks that meet the evolving needs of its customers.
Looking Ahead
“We’ve always believed in doing things the right way, and this acquisition is another step in our mission to create a cleaner, more sustainable future,” said Smith. “We’re excited to build on what’s already working and to expand our reach across Europe, bringing these trucks into new markets and ensuring they live up to their potential.”
