Japan’s manufacturing industries, including medical equipment, semiconductors and mechanical equipment, are set to benefit from Emirates SkyCargo’s new Tokyo service which will carry more than 100 tonnes of bellyhold cargo a week to Dubai and onwards to the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

TOKYO, Japan, 24th March 2010: Emirates SkyCargo will commence services of 23 tonnes of belly-hold cargo capacity on Emirates direct, non-stop services between Dubai and Tokyo (Narita) scheduled to launch on 28th March, 2010.

Narita will be the gateway to Dubai and beyond to the Middle East, Africa and Europe from Tokyo, Japan’s capital city and one of the world’s foremost economic centres, and Emirates Airline anticipates that trade between the two countries will further flourish as a result of the launch of this new direct route. With Japan’s key manufacturing industries such as medical equipment, semiconductors, heavy industries, and mechanical equipment, are concentrated in the Kanto region in Japan, Dubai will act as an important hub for the re-export of Japanese manufactured products to the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Imports from Dubai to Narita will include fresh cut flowers, fresh food products and fresh seafood from Africa and Europe, and it is anticipated that these products will be able to be delivered faster and fresher than ever before as a result of reduced travel time made possible by the new route.

Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President Cargo Ram Menen, said of the increase in cargo capacity to Japan, “Since the commencement of the Emirates flight between Osaka and Dubai, trade relations between Japan and UAE have been flourishing. Two-way trade between the two countries has grown phenomenally by 300 per cent to over US$57 billion in 2008 from $14.5 billion in 2002. With the launch of Emirates’ services to Narita, Emirates SkyCargo will play a key role in further bolstering two-way trade between Japan and the UAE.”

The 23 tonnes of belly-hold cargo capacity on Emirates aircraft will support Japanese exports of mechanical components, electric goods, automobile parts, machinery, IT peripheral devices and shipbuilding parts to the UAE, and its import of gas and oil products, cut flowers, pulses, and fresh seafood.

Emirates SkyCargo enhanced its cargo handling capabilities in 2008 with the new Cargo Mega Terminal at Dubai International Airport and is continually building on its cargo capacity to more than 100 destinations in six continents around the world. The Cargo Mega Terminal, which boasts a total area of 43,600 square meters, can handle up to 1.2 million tonnes of cargo per year and is designed as one of the world’s-most advanced cargo facilities.
