Farnborough Airport – New Hangar and taxiways

Company atg Airports
Date 23.03.2023

Following substantial planning and redevelopment, in 2003 Farnborough became a fully compliant CAA airport. But to achieve this there had to be some major investment in the site. One of the projects that had to be undertaken prior to this certification, was a runway resurface and the conversion the airfield lighting system from a military specification to the Civil Aviation standards.

As a turnkey solution provider atg airport were proud to be involved in such an undertaking. Supplying and installing new runway and taxiway lighting, complete with the cabling infrastructure, refurbishment of the substations, and the provision of constant current regulators all controlled by a new AGL control and monitoring system. On completion of the works this was handed over to TAG Aviation who at that time had taken control of the airport from the Ministry of Defence. Other investments at this time included a new radar system, a large hangar unit and a stunning new control tower.

Farnborough Airport sees the bulk of its traffic from conventional business operators and private jets, which has grown over the years to around 33,000 movements in 2022. The airport continues to thrive, and recently announced another major investment in the infrastructure by increasing the available hangar space by over 70%. This project also involves the construction of new taxiways and stopbar services along with the building of an additional AGL substation. The main contractor on the project appointed atg airports to provide several aspects of the electrical infrastructure that is required to be installed. The new substation will be fully cabled internally not just for domestic services, lighting and heating, but for the Micro200 constant current regulators (CCR’s) that are required for the new services.  The substation will also house a PLC panel that will connect to the SmartPLC system currently controlling and monitoring all the AGL services and equipment. The atg airports installation team are also responsible for the installation of high mast lighting for the apron areas, multiple aspects of HV works, and the installation and testing of feeder pillars for the new Ground Power Units. While the construction of the project is underway the aim is to also ensure that there is no impact on the day-to-day activities of the airport.

Our association with Farnborough Airport goes back many years, and atg airports are pleased to be continuing to support the airport once more on this new venture.
