Flexible aluminium tent structures and Hangars for the Airport Industry

With sunny beaches and a pleasant climate, Portugal ranks among Europe’s most-visited countries. Lisbon Portela Airport serviced 13.4 million passengers in 2007. That represented a dramatic 43 percent increase from 2002 for Portugal’s largest airport. Portela needed to expand to accommodate the additional passengers and freight, but its location just seven kilometers from Lisbon’s city centre makes this challenging. The surrounding area has already seen extensive development, limiting the airport’s options.

For this and other reasons, plans proceeded to build a new Lisbon airport outside the city. However, the proposed location in Alcochete won’t open until at least 2017, leaving Portela to cope with increasing passenger volume for several more years. These factors combined to make temporary expansion the best option.

Losberger Comes to the Rescue

Portela had already experienced the benefits of the Losberger FlexiTerminals © , the mobile structure solution from Losberger GmbH. During Euro 2004, when football enthusiasts flocked to Portugal for the three-week long spectacle, Losberger created a temporary terminal building using its maxiflex component system to accommodate overflow passenger capacities. These tent halls provided facilities that met all international safety standards and smoothly handled the increased passenger traffic. Their low cost and convenience made for a tremendous all-around solution.

The same company that delivered a great temporary application, gave Portela the ideal long-term solution as well. Losberger Relocatable Terminals enabled the airport to construct a semi-permanent terminal exclusively for domestic departures. Losberger’s Revolution product – which was used to construct the terminal – is strong and durable. This innovative, internationally-patented fabric roof building system offers brilliant yet simple engineering. With a clean, architectural modern look, Revolution enhances both the interior and exterior of any airport.

The new “Terminal 2” has allowed Portela to handle far greater passenger capacity since it opened in August 2007. Located on the airport’s south side, Terminal 2 makes travel much easier for people connecting through Lisbon to popular tourist destinations like Portugal’s Algarve region and Madeira. At the same time, its presence has eased congestion in the main terminal during peak travel hours.

Terminal 2 features three separate buildings covering 7,725 square meters. The main contractor Siemens, Industrial Solutions and Services Group completed the interior of the terminal, which has a check-in area that covers 2,100 square meters. That space includes 22 check-in counters, six electronic check-in kiosks, six security control posts, a restaurant area, positions to weigh and process luggage, lavatories and technical assistance facilities. Terminal 2 also has 12 boarding gates and a boarding lounge that seats up to 480 passengers. The terminal can handle 60 departures and approximately 5,000 passengers per day.

Under these circumstances, Losberger provided the perfect solution with a safe, flexible, rapid, economical alternative to permanent construction. It only took eight weeks to construct a frame, cover and side-wall system. Completion occurred long before a permanent structure could have gotten built.

A World of Different Applications for Airport Terminals

Portela Airport faced a situation where it needed space. But Losberger’s Relocatable Terminals work in many other scenarios including emergencies, renovations and redevelopment. They have also provided facility solutions at airports in Nuremberg, Germany, Luxor, Egypt and Doha, Qatar.

The Revolution product line features a modular component system, which comes in five-by-five meter increments pre-engineered and manufactured to meet exact specifications. This enables them to fit perfectly into almost any location, which opens up numerous possibilities. Revolution offers a variety of floor plans, roof styles, shapes and designs, all at affordable prices.

This building system adapts swiftly to changes. Should passenger or cargo volume spike, Revolution can expand quickly to accommodate increased space requirements. Conversely, the product can get disassembled and relocated elsewhere if necessary. It enables airports to grow incrementally and get maximum efficiency from their space. Since permanent expansion may result in overbuilding, Losberger offers a more cost-effective, flexible solution.
