Adequately protecting temporary works areas on a live airfield can prove costly. Providing adequate protection for ground works from passing jet blast, without anchoring to a mass foundation presents its own design problems and costs.

“What if we can re-use the blast fence components as part of the fixed barrier at the end of the project?”

What you see in the photographs may look like there is a piece missing, but there is logic to this unusual barrier. The goal for this project was to provide a 3m High blast protection fence that can be quickly and efficiently relocated around temporary works without the need to cast specialist foundations; with components that can be re-used in the planned 4m high fixed jet blast fence along the taxiway boundaries.

IAC recently provided this palletised 3m high Vertical Mesh Barrier for control of jet blast, deployed as part of the Dublin North Runway expansion project, Ireland.

By making minor design adaptions to the main steel structure, IAC utilised 4m high vertical mesh barrier stanchions, mounted to a bespoke designed concrete base pallet, (Designed by our trusted civil design consultant partners at AKSWard), with mesh components installed to the 3m height requirement.

Once temporary works protection is no longer required, the steelwork can be dis-assembled and seamlessly incorporated into the planned 4m high taxiway boundary protection fence as required to protect infrastructure once the runway becomes active. This eliminates potential waste and disposal requirements, together with ongoing cost savings based upon an integrated approach to understanding customer needs and airport development.
