Fraport buys more wind power

Date 26.05.2023

Starting in July, Centrica Energy Trading will supply Frankfurt Airport with 63 gigawatt hours of electricity annually

Airport operator Fraport continues to invest in green wind energy. A new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the European energy supplier Centrica Energy Trading A/S will supply the air traffic hub Frankfurt Airport with an annual wind power volume of around 63 gigawatt hours from July. This corresponds to an output of 22 megawatts. The energy comes from newly built mainland plants near Bremerhaven. The contract will initially run for five years.

From 2026, Fraport’s energy mix is to change thanks to a comprehensive PPA   with a capacity of 85 megawatts mainly from renewable energy sources. The new power purchase agreement with Centrica supplements a PPA drawn up in 2021 with Fraport bought wind energy for the first time .

“Fraport AG has committed itself to an ambitious climate protection goal,” explains Felix Kreutel, Head of Real Estate and Energy at Fraport. “By 2045, we will reduce CO 2 emissions to zero throughout the group. The PPA with Centrica is an important building block within our strategic planning, which is already making a significant contribution to aligning our energy mix accordingly.”

The airport operator’s electricity mix is increasingly made up of renewable energies. Solar and wind power in particular should help to reduce Fraport AG’s CO 2 emissions at Frankfurt Airport to 50,000 tons by 2030. Compared to the base year of the international climate protection agreement of 1990, this corresponds to a reduction of 78 percent. The airport operator waives in hisClimate protection strategy based entirely on compensation measures.
