- Project enables digital transformation and compliance with European ATM regulations
- Frequentis systems to improve data exchange and situational awareness
The Latvian air navigation service provider, LGS, has contracted Frequentis to modernise key components of its air traffic management (ATM) infrastructure. The project lays the foundation for a faster and more reliable digital exchange of flight, weather, and airspace data – a crucial step in Latvia’s shift toward fully digital ATM and trajectory-based operations (TBO). TBO, currently one of the most important developments in the ATM domain, supports more efficient and environmentally optimised flight planning by leveraging real-time data.
The upgrade enables LGS to migrate from its current messaging system to SWIM – an initiative by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) designed to harmonise and streamline information exchange in ATM. The project aligns with European regulatory goals, including Common Project 1 (CP1) under the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) deployment framework.
“This project marks a key milestone in Latvia’s journey toward a fully digital and integrated air traffic management environment,” says Imants Viskers, Head of Technical Department at LGS. “By adopting SWIM technologies, we are reinforcing our commitment to innovation, efficiency, and safety.”
The project builds on a trusted partnership of over 20 years, with Frequentis solutions already supporting LGS in managing critical aeronautical, meteorological, and flight planning data. This infrastructure will now be enhanced with two key components: MosaiX SWIM and CADAS-ATS. MosaiX SWIM will provide the technical backbone for SWIM services, enabling digital weather data, aeronautical notices (NOTAM – Notice to Airmen), and flight and flow information (FF-ICE) exchange with Eurocontrol and other stakeholders. CADAS-ATS will handle flight plans, NOTAM, and briefing services, while also serving as the primary source for aeronautical data.
“We’re proud to deepen our long-standing partnership with LGS through this forward-looking project,” says Reinhard Grimm, Vice President ATM at Frequentis. “This is more than a system upgrade – it’s a strategic enabler for Latvia’s future airspace management. With our flexible, standards-based platform, we’re helping LGS meet evolving regulatory requirements while preparing for the next generation of digital ATM services.”
