Fully Automatic Transmissions for Airport Vehicles

Date 13.02.2013

Turkish bus manufacturer TCV provides 24 CNG, full low-floor buses featuring Allison transmissions to OTOBÜS in Istanbul; order builds on midi bus and coach success.

TCV, Turkey's domestically-owned bus manufacturer, has selected the Allison T310R transmission for its new KARAT full low-floor, CNG-fuelled, 12-meter bus. The first 24 KARAT buses were delivered to Istanbul Buses Corporation and highlighted during an exclusive ceremony. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s president, Mr. Kadir TopbaÅŸ, attended the event and reaffirmed Istanbul’s effort to meet stringent environmental standards. Allison Transmission is already known in the Turkish public transportation sector for midi bus applications, and this delivery signifies the company’s entrance into the full-size 12-meter bus market in Turkey.

The Turkish designed TCV KARAT has aroused significant interest from local authorities and private bus fleets due to its environmental credentials. A 206 kW compressed natural gas (CNG) engine from MAN is combined with an Allison T310R fully automatic transmission.  This powertrain is quiet and efficient. The Allison automatic perfectly complements the MAN gas engine, since it multiplies torque through the transmission while smoothly transferring power to the wheels and delivering excellent performance even at low engine speed.  An Allison integral retarder provides additional braking, significantly improving vehicle service brake life.

“The KARAT by TCV combines a comfortable and safe travelling experience for the passengers with a durable, solid and reliable vehicle structure. With several powertrain configurations, we offer fleets a choice; this approach combined with good availability of affordable spare parts and simple maintenance requirements supports our focus on reduced fuel consumption and lower operational costs. A CNG engine option makes the KARAT an environmentally-friendly bus. By collaborating with Allison Transmission, we aim to meet the expectations of our customers in the best possible way” says Timuçin Bayraktar, General Manager at TCV. “Allison transmissions help to reduce maintenance costs and fuel consumption while delivering a safe and comfortable drive” continues Mr. Bayraktar.

“For several years, Allison transmissions have operated successfully in midi buses and coaches around the country. With this delivery, Allison now enters the 12 m city bus segment in Turkey. We are focused on providing the best combination of cost, quality, reliability, service and overall value to both municipalities and private bus operators” says Taner Gider, Country Manager for Allison Transmission in Turkey.
