“Sweden is one of the best countries in the world where flight safety is concerned”. We can hardly get a better testimonial than that. The formulation is from the Traffic Committee of the Swedish Parliament. They also approve of the civil-military integrated air navigation service.

“This is unique to Sweden and good for our customers, because the air space is exploited more efficiently, which saves money for all parties,” says LFV’s acting Director General Mikael Larsson.

On 5 and 10 June two customer events were held in the RTC facility in Sundsvall. RTC stands for Remote Tower Centre and is LFV’s control centre for local air traffic control at a distance.

LFV’s centre in Sundsvall for remote air traffic control is basically ready to be put into operation. What remains is validation and approval from the Swedish Transport Agency. LFV plans to start operations in early 2014. For that reason LFV took the opportunity to invite representatives from Sweden’s airports to Sundsvall to show the facility and demonstrate what will soon be a reality. Seventeen participants visited RTC during the two-day event.

“It was very gratifying to have so many participants, considering the short notice. The visitors came from all over the country and it was especially nice that many of them came from small municipal airports currently being served by AFIS under their own auspices,” says Erik Bäckman, Marketing Manager at LFV for the remote-controlled tower service.

Inside the RTC all participants had the opportunity to test the equipment by “changing airport” and manoeuvring the zoom camera. They also got to see the camera tower with technical equipment that will replace the traditional air traffic control tower. Over the course of two days the 17 participants got an overview of the technology that will be able to offer airport traffic control at a lower cost but with greater safety and capacity.

“Accessibility and a low price are factors that are decisive for us,” the airport directors agree.

Among representatives of the smaller airports, the discussions were linked to the fact that at these airports the controllers do more than just sit in the tower. For LFV, this means finding solutions that also lower their total cost.

“If the camera tower with IR can solve my thoughts about having a fence at the airport, then there is a positive gain in this,” says Arne Andersson, Director at Gävle Airport.

“Remote Tower Services (RTS) opens up a new market for us with new opportunities for Mora Siljan Airport,” says Nils Arthur Andersson. “We could attract new customers and have greater flexibility in our hours of operation.”

“Economy and flexibility are important to us at Örebro Airport,” explains Mikael Smedberg. “If through RTS we can get a flexible, safe and efficient ATM system, then obviously that will be of interest to us.”

The event concluded with a workshop with the visitors to gather information, thoughts and other viewpoints for the future development of remote air traffic control.
