The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) on behalf of the civil aviation authority of Cyprus has chosen a radio system from Rohde & Schwarz to ensure reliable ATC communications. The complete system includes more than 170 R&S Series4200 radios. The system was installed by Netfon Services Ltd. and put into operation in December 2013; it is providing reliable and efficient communications between aircraft and ground stations.

Cyprus has modernized its ATC infrastructure with radio equipment from Rohde & Schwarz. The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) contracted Netfon Services Ltd. to implement the project on behalf of the Cyprus Department of Civil Aviation. Netfon is the Rohde & Schwarz local representative in Cyprus. The Cyta engineers were trained at Rohde & Schwarz in Germany.

Cyta decided in favor of an all-in-one solution from Rohde & Schwarz to upgrade the country’s ground-air radiocommunications system. The Rohde & Schwarz system includes more than 170 R&S Series4200 digital transmitters, receivers and transceivers in the VHF and UHF bands. Netfon installed the system together with the appropriate antennas, filters and accessory equipment at 14 sites in Cyprus. The system was approved by Cyta in December 2013 and has been running smoothly since that time, providing reliable radiocommunications for the Cyprus flight information region (FIR).

Kyriakos Christodoulides, Managing Director of Netfon Services Ltd., added, "Rohde & Schwarz has been an invaluable partner, having a proven history of providing advanced communications equipment globally. This project emphasizes the importance of quality, service and support. We are very proud that both Cyta and Rohde & Schwarz have entrusted us with this challenging task, which we have completed to the full satisfaction of all concerned".

Established on the market for many years, R&S Series4200 VHF/UHF radios provide reliable communications and are also easy to configure and operate. As an option, the receivers can be fitted with increased functionality by adding the ability to detect simultaneous transmissions (DSiT functionality). When signals arrive at the same time on the same frequency, it ensures that even the weaker signal is detected and alerts air traffic controllers, e.g. via voice communications system (VCS). Rohde & Schwarz is the first company to offer DSiT functionality in ATC radios.

Rohde & Schwarz will present its tried and tested as well as innovative solutions for the future of ATC at ATC Global 2014 in Beijing. You can visit us from September 17 to 19, 2014 at the China National Convention Center (CNCC), booth A728. More information: http://www.rohde-schwarz.com/ad/press/ATC_Global
