We were hired by one of the participants in CAFHI who acted as engineer for the project. CAFHI undertook hydrant system modification works under instruction of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore in readiness for entry into service of the A380 at the end of 2006.

ejet’s key role was to carry out analysis of the impact of the new A380 aircraft on existing hydrant fuelling at Terminals 1 and 2, and to execute any necessary engineering to facilitate fuelling of this aircraft and mitigate the impacts.

The assignment started with analysis of the impact of proposed A380 parking on dispenser inlet hose reach, safety distances and location of existing hydrant system Emergency Shut Down stations. We identified key issues and proposed solutions in the form of layout drawings for affected stands with the proposed location of new hydrant pits.

After this we carried out detailed engineering and defined the contractor’s scope of work – trying to achieve an optimum balance of hydrant system modifications. The client was conscious of life cycle cost and operational downtime during construction. Accordingly, we prepared a full budget for the construction part of the project and carefully planned how the tie-in to the live system for each new hydrant pit would be achieved.

After we had completed the tender package for the construction works (including drafting the construction contract), evaluated tender responses and a contractor had been appointed, the project moved on to the actual construction phase.

During this phase, firstly we carried out a HAZOP (as a statutory requirement for the planned construction works) and did quarterly monitoring of progress and quality of the works on site.

Lastly, we reviewed the contractor’s handover documentation and approved it on behalf of the client.

Changi airport is an exciting place to work and we firmly believe that we have made a good impact into a key part of the airport infrastructure. We look forward to working there again in the future.

Client testimonial

"Having been Chairman of the aviation fuel consortium at the new Hong Kong International Airport in the late 1990’s, I worked closely with John over the 3 year period that he was General Manager. He impressed the Board with his capabilities and drive, and I said at the time that we were lucky to have him working for us."

"When Chevron was appointed engineer to the aviation fuel consortium to ready Singapore Changi Airport for the new A380 Super Jumbo aircraft, it was natural that we should seek John’s assistance."

"John and the ejet team helped deliver this complicated project, involving design, engineering, planning and construction on many workfronts over a live aviation fuel system. We were glad to have John on the team, bringing with him his considerable experience in this type of work. The end result, and the process by which we got there, was good. John and ejet are to be commended for the way the project was handled."
