The ‘Command of Military Works’ (UAE Armed Forces) appointed Bin Hafeez General Contracting Est. as contractor for the ‘design and build’ of a new military airbase on the North-Eastern side of Abu Dhabi International Airport to support armed forces activities in the Gulf Region.
RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel system was selected in place of a steel-reinforced grated concrete channel to provide surface drainage in external pavement areas.
Both the client and the contractor considered RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel to be the most durable and reliable option when considering all possible systems suitable for an F 900 load application.
RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel is manufactured from corrosion resistant materials. This characteristic is especially important for projects in the Middle East as the local environment can be highly corrosive due to the following conditions:
- High climate temperatures
- Wide temperature differentials
- Humid atmosphere
- Strong UV radiation
- Saline environment
- Ground sulfates
- Sand abrasion
- Corrosive chemicals
When designing surface drainage in airside and landside areas on airports, engineers may not be fully familiar with the corrosive nature of the local environment.
This is important to consider as it could have a major impact on the overall performance, longevity and long-term maintenance costs of the drainage system.
Drainage system design and materials must be able to withstand the corrosive environment as well as the usual extreme operational conditions in airside areas.
RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel is light-weight, so units were also quicker and easier to install compared with pre-cast concrete channels.
This system has also been used on two additional airbases in the UAE, at Sweihan and Das Island.
