HAURATON at RAF Lossiemouth, UK

RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, north-east Scotland is one of two RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) stations which protect UK airspace. 

Team Lossie is made up of four Typhoon combat aircraft squadrons, one Poseidon MRA1 squadron, and an RAF Regiment squadron.

RAF Lossiemouth personnel and aircraft also support operations worldwide and host numerous national and international exercises.

Development work at the airbase in May 2023 included the installation of a new wash bay area.

This required a strong and durable linear drainage system (F 900 load capability) with high intake and drainage capacity to cope with high volumes of water used for cleaning large military aircraft and operations vehicles imposing ultra-heavy-duty loads and dynamic forces at the surface when manoeuvring into place.

The system also needed to have a high-level of corrosion resistance to withstand cleaning detergents, de-icing solutions and the extreme Scottish climate experienced during winter months.

FASERFIX SUPER 200 and 300 drainage channels with Ductile Iron Slotted Gratings (F 900) were selected as the system perfectly met project requirements.

Cast from fibre-reinforced concrete with a durable edge-rail, FASERFIX SUPER has a proven structural design for superior resistance to dynamic forces and extreme loads apparent within ultra-heavy-duty environments such as airports and airbases.

FASERFIX SUPER has a higher specification compared with alternative brands, achieving higher performance and reduced maintenance costs over the project’s life.

• Thicker channel body wall dimensions (up to 10mm thicker compared with alternative brands)

• 40mm deep channel edge-frame and grating (up to 20mm thicker); design resists longitudinal and lateral movement

• Gratings securely fixed with 8 bolts per metre (achieves 16 locking points over one unit for extra strength and safety). Innovative bolt design reduces the risk of F.O.D. in airside areas.

• Material resistance to frost, salts, chemicals, extreme temperatures and UV light.

• Class 1A (non-flammable) fire rating (DIN 4102).

• Fibre-reinforced concrete with ‘natural’ basalt fibres for additional strength, durability and resistance, as well as being environmentally friendly.
