Warsaw-Radom Airport is a joint civilmilitary airport in central Poland, located close to Radom city centre and approximately 100 km from Warsaw.

The airport has been in operation since the 1920s, originally starting life as a training facility for the first Polish civilian pilot training school (1929).

In recent years, the airport was completely redeveloped by the government-owned Polish Airports State Enterprise (PPL) to become the low-cost airport of Warsaw.

This included demolishing the previous terminal and passenger infrastructure, with the entire site re-developed from scratch, with a new terminal building and associated airside and landside pavements and facilities.

HAURATON was invited to become involved in the redevelopment of Warsaw-Radom Airport following previous successful work at Warsaw-Chopin Airport, with the same client and consultant associated with both projects.

Engineers from HAURATON’s subsidiary in Poland worked closely with WLC Inżynierowie (Kraków), the project consultant responsible for detailed design, providing comprehensive technical support and hydraulic design services.

Warsaw-Radom Airport airside areas are subjected to constant traffic by large aircraft, baggage trucks with trollies, and heavy-duty operations vehicles, so surface drainage systems and structures within pavement areas needed to be strong, durable and impact resistant.

Airside catchment areas are extensive, generating high volumes of stormwater run-off.

A range of rainwater management systems was supplied by HAURATON, including modular linear drainage, coalescence separators and special steel glycol tanks.

RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel F 900 with retained gratings in Spheroidal Ductile Iron was used to provide high-volume interception, attenuation, drainage and discharge of surface water from large catchment areas at the PPS Apron, Taxiway DK, Access Lanes and Hangars housing heavy-duty airside operational vehicles.

FASERFIX KS 100 and 200 mm channels in Fibre-Reinforced Concrete, with ductile iron gratings, were used for surface drainage of pavements associated with operations buildings (airside) and parking areas in front of the terminal building (landside). FASERFIX KS channels were also used in some airport roadway areas.

FASERFIX KS+ 150mm channels with integral pre-cast concrete encasement were also supplied for use in roadways associated with the airport infrastructure.

AQUAFIX SKPEn separators were installed in locations where surface contaminants were present, such as landside parking areas.

Special corrosion resistant steel tanks (AQUAFIX ZRS) used to store glycol were also supplied, as the airport is subjected to freezing weather conditions during winter months.

The use of high-capacity RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel F 900 to provide effective drainage and attenuation reduced pipe diameters and the requirement for outlets, pipework and associated chambers, which in-turn significantly reduced the time and cost of installing the surface drainage system for large airside pavements.

After extensive analysis and testing, HAURATON systems have also been approved by ITWL (Instytut Techniczny Wojsk Lotniczych, Poland / Air Force Institute of Technology). As this airport is also used for military purposes, having this additional accreditation is an important requirement.

The airport has one 2500 x 45m runway. Civilian taxiways are 20 meters wide (modernised in 2023), while the military taxiways are 14 meters wide, renovated in 2000, 2012 and 2023.

The new airport was opened on 27th April 2023.

HAURATON drainage products have been used on over 30 airport / airfield projects in Poland.
