The new Daybed by Thomas Kastholm is getting positive feedback from travellers and airport officials alike. Meanwhile, Hans J. Wegner’s legendary “Kastrup” series celebrates more than 50 years at Copenhagen Airport in Denmark. Who says high-end design furniture and high-traffic locations don’t mix?
Carl Hansen & Son, the Danish producer of high-end design furniture, is not taking the success of its new “Daybed” lying down. Copenhagen Airport in Denmark bought two of the elegant days beds shortly after launch, and there are more interesting projects on the horizon.
“We were pleased to show our contacts at the airport the Daybed while it was still in development,” explains Lene B. Ehrenreich from Carl Hansen & Son. “And we were of course thrilled to install the first pieces of the new furniture in Terminal 3. We can see that travellers have quickly embraced the design, and that its construction stands up nicely to all kinds of use. The airport wanted something that could build on the Hans J. Wegner heritage – and we are convinced that they got it.”
Hans J. Wegner’s visionary “Kastrup” series, designed in 1958 for the Copenhagen Airport, was no easy act to follow. The furniture has been a design feature at Scandinavia’s leading air hub for more than 50 years. Over the decades all original installations have been re-upholstered, of course, and new lounge areas have been added, making Wegner’s Kastrup series a familiar sight for generations of air travellers and design lovers.
Wegner’s Kastrup series consists of 2, 3 and 4-person sofa benches (CH402, CH403 and CH404) as well as an easy chair (CH401) and a coffee table (CH413). The clean, iconic lines of Wegner’s design belie an exceptionally rugged construction that has stood the test of traffic for over 50 years. Every piece is handcrafted on a beech wood frame; legs, beams and the boomerang-shaped sides are made of stainless steel. Like other Wegner furniture, his Kastrup series is designed to be as beautiful when seen from the front as it is from behind.
