IKUSI Research Project to Develop an Airport Management Centre

Company IKUSI
Date 12.06.2014
  • The VOYAGE project seeks to improve process monitoring and optimization, safety/security and passenger experience at airports.
  • The companies Idom, Nextel, Lookwise, Barik, CBT, NTS and the Basque research centres VICOMtech, Tecnalia, INNOVALIA Association and DeustoTech are also participating in this project.
  • Voyage comes under the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community’s Etorgai programme designed to further the strategic research of Basque companies.

The main aim of the VOYAGE Project is to develop and introduce, into the Basque Autonomous Community (region), an innovative Airport Management Centre based on Cloud Computing, Big Data and Smart Analytics technologies that will make available new applications and services to the various airport agents (operators, airlines, passengers, etc.). The aim of all this is to help to make the business profitable and improve the quality of the processes at airports, to improve airport safety/security, and to generate fresh sources of income from an improved passenger experience.

The development of the VOYAGE project will enable the two major challenges facing airport infrastructure management to be addressed: to get the processes that take place in the airport to work efficiently while providing passengers with a quality service. These are aims that have to be met within the complex context characterised by growing passenger traffic which, according to ACI (Airports Council International), is set to see a 2.37-fold increase within 20 years (2009-2030), coupled with restrictions on making the necessary investments in the infrastructure in order to tackle demand. And on top of all this, we have the fact that users are becoming increasingly particular and are demanding that their transit through airports should be pleasant and fast.

The following aspects feature among the specific aims that VOYAGE is pursuing: a cut in aircraft rotation times (stopover time) made possible by greater efficiency and optimization of the processes; a reduction in investment in the current airport resource management systems thanks to the massive use of Cloud resources that are more scalable, modular, evolutionable and flexible; greater capacity to offer personalised, tailored services based on information that is updated in real time and has been crossed with the airline, the airport and the passenger him-/herself; additional income through specific offers at the destination, pre-travel information, discounts, etc.; greater capacity to integrate information from a range of sources (meteorology, air traffic, incidents, etc.) in order to predict and anticipate how the journey will develop and to improve the traveller’s experience; and smart services based on position, preferences and circumstances of the trip, etc.; guiding inside the terminal building, optimum control of traveller flows to minimize delays and crowding, customer segmentation, etc.
