BagQuality Network - Reduce Cost of Mishandled Baggage

Company Lyngsoe Systems
Date 07.01.2013

BagQuality Network is a new and innovative approach to improve the baggage handling quality and consequently reduce the cost of mishandled baggage in the aviation industry.

The BagQuality Network provides benefits for airlines, airports, handlers as well as passengers.

The fundamentally new approach to baggage handling quality is to work with analysis and improvements in a network structure, instead of each individual airport. The BagQuality Network approach starts when the passenger delivers the baggage at check-in and continues all the way to the point where the passenger leaves the arrival airport. The network has already been established in a large network with several airports – currently in Scandinavia (AAL, AAR, CPH, OSL, ARN, LLA, MMX, GOT – and more are on the way).

Baggage handling problems are causing a huge cost for the airlines – in 2009 around 3.1 bill USD. Last year the figure was slightly lower, but still 2.5 bill USD per year, which is a significant cost for airlines working in an extremely competitive market with low margins.

The BagQuality Network is established as a collaboration between airline (SAS), airport (AAL), IATA, Lyngsoe Systems A/S and Aalborg University, and the project receives funding from EU and the Danish state. In this way, we are able to feed products and solutions into the industry in order to boost the baggage handling quality. The aim is to reduce the cost of mishandled baggage by 50%.

During a flight travel with transfer, the baggage is shifting between different companies – airline, airport, handler, security, customs – a travel with just one transfer can easily mean a shift of hands for the baggage between 10 and 15 times. The complex logistics of bringing a bag from A to B through many shifts of responsibility can cause mishandled baggage and you will never know exactly where in the process it went wrong. With the BagQuality Network solution implemented, you will have facts about the baggage process available, and you will be able to analyze the baggage handling process in details and even make forecast in order to prevent baggage handling bottlenecks.
