Innovative LED Airfield Lighting Solutions

HELLA welcomed international guests to a comprehensive information event on the topic of airfield lighting

Lippstadt, 21 March 2013. Following the success of the first National Airports and Planers Day in autumn 2012, HELLA sent invitations on March 14 to planers and decision-makers from the world of airport construction to an international workshop at the company headquarters in Lippstadt. The many visitors were given not only a comprehensive overview of the product range for airfield lighting but were also treated to a tour of the production facility, where they were impressed by the manufacturing methods and the quality of the materials used. In the HELLA light testing facility, the largest of its kind in Europe, the visitors experienced the pavement and elevated lights live, gaining an up-close insight into light color, installation depth and other criteria. In a direct comparison, the advantages of LED lighting over conventional halogen lights were clear. One technical highlight was the first presentation of an LED infra-red light. The program was supplemented with theoretical aspects, such as the presentation of take-off and landing runways with different circuits or the presentation on various financing models. Sonja Strand, responsible for the Airport Lighting sector at HELLA, spoke of her happiness following the event: "We were able to give the participants an all-round impression of LED airfield lighting. The positive reaction encourages us to stage a similar event next year."

HELLA now offers a comprehensive range of pavement and elevated lights using modern LED technology. Power and maintenance costs for LED pavement lights can be reduced by up to 70% compared to halogen lights, and CO₂ emissions may be reduced by as much as 85%. HELLA developed these lighting components in close cooperation with a number of international airports, giving particular attention to their requirements, special features and needs. In October 2011, HELLA expanded its own product range with the take-over of the Danish company Induperm, thus strengthening its global position in the airfield lighting sector. Induperm is a specialist in the areas of lighting systems, tower equipment, airport equipment and helicopter landing pads. Many international airports now rely on HELLA's expertise.
