Integrated Air Traffic Management Technology Solutions

NAV CANADA announced today that the Engineering Projects group of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA-EP) has selected NAVCANatm technology to manage their critical air traffic control information.

NAVCANstrips, the advanced NAV CANADA electronic flight strip system, will be installed at the Dubai International Airport Control Tower and Dubai World Central Control Tower. The deployment of NAVCANstrips in Dubai is already underway and is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2012.

NAVCANstrips is a system that allows air traffic controllers to manage flight data online, eliminating the need for traditional paper flight strips. It provides immediate access to key information, and permits more efficient management and use of airspace and airport capacity. Flight data transactions are automated and can be configured to generate flow management statistics and other information.

“NAV CANADA is pleased to have been chosen by DCAA-EP for our first deployment of NAVCANatm technology solutions in the Middle East,” said NAV CANADA President and CEO John Crichton. “We look forward to collaborating closely on this deployment with our colleagues in Dubai, to implement our world-leading electronic strip system in two of the most advanced airport towers in the world.

NAVCANstrips will help to manage the growth of traffic in and around Dubai airports. “It is a system that gets better each year, with added functionality producing new efficiency gains,” added Crichton. “The system helps controllers manage and transfer information critical to their jobs, safely and efficiently, with flight data available almost instantaneously on their touch-screen displays.”

NAVCANstrips is already in operation at more than 70 Canadian sites, and has been adopted internationally by the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Australia. With the Dubai deployment, NAVCANstrips will be operational on four continents.

Services provided by NAV CANADA to the DCAA-EP include software development, system installation, operational and maintenance training, and hardware and software maintenance as specified, following system deployment.

Dubai International Airport is ranked the fourth busiest airport in the world in terms of international passengers according to Airports Council International. The airport serves more than 130 airlines flying to over 220 destinations across six continents. Dubai World Central Airport opened in June of 2010 and, when completed to the full capacity, will be the world’s largest passenger and cargo hub with a capacity of up to 160 million passengers and more than 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.

NAVCANstrips is a key part of an integrated line of NAVCANatm products called NAVCANsuite, which helps Air Traffic Controllers manage and transfer information critical to air traffic control. It does so by combining flight, surveillance and operational data in an integrated working position to provide fast and reliable access to critical airport, tower and terminal air traffic control information to the controller. The NAVCANsuite features a work-station with up to four touch screen monitors that provide NAVCANatm technology.

Marking 15 years as Canada’s private sector civil air navigation services provider, with operations from coast to coast to coast, NAV CANADA provides air traffic control, flight information, weather briefings, aeronautical information services, airport advisory services and electronic aids to navigation. NAVCANatm is a leading line of integrated air traffic management products, applications and services operationally deployed at over 80 sites worldwide for safe, efficient and cost-effective air traffic management.
