The Administration de la Navigation Aerienne (ANA) has selected defence and security company Saab’s subsidiary Saab Sensis’ Advanced-Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) for the safe and efficient management of Luxembourg Airport’s runway and maneuvering areas. The A-SMGCS will fuse multiple surveillance sources for a comprehensive view of the airport surface and to provide runway incursion alerts to the air traffic controllers.

The Saab Sensis A-SMGCS will fuse surveillance data from Saab Sensis multilateration sensors, two Surface Movement Radars and VeeLo NextGen™  vehicle locators for the location and identification of all aircraft and vehicles operating on the airport’s surface. Further, the surveillance data is integrated with Saab Sensis’ Safety Logic conflict detection and alerting algorithms to provide controllers with advanced visual and auditory warning of potential runway incursions. The data will be displayed at controller working positions using the NAVCANsuite integrated tower automation system.

“As the country’s main airport,LuxembourgAirport’s runway needs to maintain safe operation no matter the weather,” said François Mathieu, head of ATC for ANA. “The Saab Sensis A-SMGCS provides us with all-weather surveillance needed for enhanced airport surface safety and improved year-round operational efficiency.”

LuxembourgAirportis a single runway airport that handles a diverse array of aircraft, from scheduled commercial traffic to general aviation flights. The airport experiences approximately 100,000 movements per year.

“Saab Sensis’ A-SMGCS utilizes many field-proven, leading surveillance technologies and the industry’s most robust conflict detection and alerting capabilities to provide ANA with a world-class safety and efficiency solution,” said Ken Kaminski, senior vice president of Saab Sensis. “Our A-SMGCS has the flexibility to grow with the airport, such as coupling the system with Wide Area Multilateration for terminal area surveillance and data sharing for Collaborative Decision Making applications.”

Saab Sensis A-SMGCS is in operation or being deployed to more than 40 of the busiest airports around the world, includingAustralia,Hong Kong,India,Israel,Saudi Arabiaand the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) program.
