This morning, Finmeccanica – Selex ES inaugurated the company’s new Cyber Security Centre of Excellence in Chieti, Italy, in the presence of the Minister of the Interior Hon Angelino Alfano. The centre is a physical representation of Finmeccanica – Selex ES’s extensive technological capabilities in computer security. The centre is supported by the company’s major investments in the cyber domain – an area that has become a worldwide priority.

One of the fundamental objectives of Finmeccanica – Selex ES is to define a strategic model for cyber security which will not only meet Europe's needs but also support the development of Italy’s digital agenda. This model will bring together the group’s skills and unique technologies to strengthen the abilities of government customers and individuals to respond to evolving cyber threats.

The Cyber Security Centre of Excellence at Chieti comprises the Security Operation Centre (SOC) and the Open Source Intelligence Centre (OSIC) where the Supercalculator (high performance computer) is housed. Through these centres, Finmeccanica – Selex ES provides security and cyber intelligence services for protection against cyber attacks.

The Security Operation Centre provides unparalleled situational awareness by identifying malicious cyber activity, dynamically analysing it, correlating it with other events and evaluating the associated risk. Prevention and defence activities against cyber threats are based on alarms sounded by the SOC in presence attack scenarios or from the identification of new vulnerabilities in information infrastructures. The SOC can also restore the integrity and availability of information and systems that have been attacked.

The Finmeccanica – Selex ES 400 TFlops Supercalculator is thirtieth on the "Top500" list of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world, and is second in the world "Green500" league, which evaluates supercomputing infrastructures in terms of their energy efficiency rate.

Finmeccanica – Selex ES has experience in providing cyber security for the defence industry and for the civilian market with customers including governments and large industrial and service sector companies. Through these projects the company has helped to protect critical infrastructure (energy, transport and telecommunications), companies and individual citizens. Finmeccanica – Selex ES offers a range of products and services that can be combined to meet the specific requirements of customers. The company aims to supply the highest level of support across all phases of intervention, from risk analysis to the design and implementation of security architecture and training for the prevention and management of incidents.

Finmeccanica – Selex ES also heads-up NATO's cyber security network, the largest cyber security project ever awarded outside the borders of the United States. In February 2012, the company signed a development, implementation, and support contract for the NATO Computer Incident Response Capability – Full Operating Capability (NCIRC-FOC). This capability will ensure the safety of information at around 50 NATO sites and facilities in 28 countries around the world, with over 20,000 users.

The Chieti site
The facility in Chieti, in the Italian region of Abruzzo, employs approximately 160 highly qualified staff. Technologies developed at the site include cyber security intelligence & information assurance, military and professional communications and communication and identification equipment for avionics.
