Today sees the official implementation at Schiphol of an innovative mechanical system that automatically unloads baggage containers. The new system goes by the name of 'MUM' and is a 'first' in the world of baggage handling. This new mechanical unloading system means that for the first time suitcases can be unloaded from baggage containers and trolleys without any physical effort being required. This makes the baggage handling process more efficient and improves working conditions. The first mechanical unloading system is now up and running in the baggage hall under Pier D. The MUM system beautifully complements the robot already in use at Schiphol that loads baggage into containers automatically.

When removed from an aircraft, containers are transferred to a roller conveyor known as the Automatic Loading Transport (ALT) system and transported automatically to the new mechanical unloading system. This Mechanical Unloading Module (MUM) lifts up the container, tips it over and carefully empties its contents onto a lateral. Cameras record the position of each suitcase, which can be turned round or set straight as necessary. The KLM employees who use the MUM have already received special training in the operation of this system.

Innovation
The companies Moderniek and Eagle Vision were brought in to develop the MUM. Moderniek designed and supplied the MUM and ALT, with Eagle Vision supplying the requisite camera vision technology. In its role as future user, KLM was very closely involved in the development and testing of the system.

70 MB
The development and introduction of the MUM and ALT systems are important steps on the road to realising Amsterdam Airport Schiphol's 70 MB programme. The main goal of this programme is to increase the number of items of baggage that can be handled at Schiphol each year to 70 million. All in all, Schiphol is investing about 800 million euro in expanding the capacity of, and improving the reliability and quality of, its baggage handling system. The 70MB programme is currently the airport's main investment programme, and it is one that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is implementing in close collaboration with KLM.

Baggage handling at Schiphol
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol places its baggage infrastructure and handling systems at the disposal of the handling companies and airlines. It is they who process the baggage and take it to and from the aircraft.
