At the beginning of 2011, Sweden and Denmark took a big step towards a united airspace. Parts of both parent companies’ operations (LFV and Navair) were integrated into the joint enterprise NUAC. By 2012, the integration will be complete and both countries’ airspace will function as one.

”With a united airspace and joint air traffic services, Denmark and Sweden take the lead in terms of the European development of air traffic services – progress which promotes aviation, society and the environment,” says NUAC’s managing director  Peter Fältsjö.

The Danish-Swedish initiative regarding the shared airspace which is about to be finalised, has a long history behind it. It was an on-going discussion for the entire first year of the millennium and lives up to the intentions the EU has for more effective air traffic control services. From a European perspective, collaboration across national borders is the key to more effective and cheaper air traffic control services. It is a positive move for passengers in the form of shorter flight times, lower fuel usage and less emissions thereby decreasing the flight’s effect on the environment.

The realisation of the plan took off in earnest in 2009 when both the Swedish and Danish governments signed an agreement to create a joint airspace block called DK/SE FAB.

NUAC’s operations will comprise en route air traffic services i.e. flights which are on their way to or from an airport in Denmark or Sweden or fly through the joint airspace without take-off or landing in either country. Tower control services will continue to be managed by local air traffic control.
