This is why investigating the pavement conditions on airport runways, after a heavy winter with snow and ice, is important!

Even though spring is coming the International Aviation Snow Symposium (I.A.S.S.) is holding a comprehensive winter operations networking conference for snow and ice control at airports.

The International Aviation Snow Symposium (I.A.S.S.) is being held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center from Sunday the 23rd of April until Tuesday the 25th of April.

The conference is focused on educating airport employees, contractors, service providers, and airport managers on how to best perform snow and ice control measures during winter operations.

The goal is to give the attendees knowledge of how to perform safe, efficient, and successful winter operations that meet regulatory requirements in all sizes of airports.

One of the companies you can meet at the International Aviation Snow Symposium, helping airports achieve the highest levels of airfield safety, is Dynatest.

Dynatest develops and produces advanced pavement testing equipment that provides accurate data to engineers all over the world. This data gives engineers vital insight into how and why pavement deteriorates both on the surface (functionally) and beneath the surface (structurally).

Investigating the pavement condition on airport runways, after a heavy winter with snow and ice, is important for several reasons according to, Sales Director from Dynatest, Randall G. Milton.

First of all, for the safety of the travelers. The condition of the pavement on the airport runway can have a significant impact on the safety when aircraft are taking off and landing.

During takeoff and landing, an aircraft imposes a significant load on the pavement due to its weight, speed, and impact forces. With several hundred airplanes coming and going every single day in an airport, the impact on the runway’s pavement can be severe.

During winter events, the pavement may have experienced damage, such as cracking or potholes, which can increase the risk of catastrophic accidents. Additionally, the pavement friction as well as ride quality can be affected.

Another reason is cost savings. By identifying pavement damage early, necessary repairs and maintenance can be made before the damage worsens and becomes more expensive to fix. Regular maintenance can save money in the long run by avoiding costly pavement reconstruction that potentially can shut runways down for a period.

The closure of an airport runway can have several impacts on airport operations, airlines, and passengers, causing great inconvenience to both passengers and airlines.

Investigating the pavement condition of a runway after a heavy winter with snow is important for maintaining safety and saving costs and this is exactly what the annual International Aviation Snow Symposium is all about.
