Trusted technology and long-standing partnership secure ground operations upgrade at a key European hub
dBD Communications is proud to announce the permanent adoption of its Minerva Momentary wireless communication system by Menzies Aviation at Budapest Airport — marking the most significant implementation of dBD systems across Menzies’ European network to date.
This commitment underscores both organisations’ shared focus on safety, operational efficiency, and the continuous improvement of ground handling practices.
A Partnership Years in the Making
dBD Communications and Menzies first began working together in 2015, when Menzies opened their operations to trial several dBD technologies. The trials were a critical turning point for dBD presence airside, helping the team to develop and refine their solutions in a real-world environment.
Among the earliest systems tested were initial versions of the Minerva Air Pushback System, which used boom microphones. Though early versions encountered challenges with aircraft interfacing and background noise, the collaboration allowed us to engineer significant improvements — many of which led to the modern wireless systems now used globally.
Budapest represents the first permanent commitment of this scale from Menzies, showcasing confidence not only in the Minerva Momentary system itself, but in the consistency, reliability and adaptability that dBD brings to high-pressure ramp operations.
Bernadett Gogolak, Station Manager at Menzies Aviation, comments: “Innovation is key at Menzies. Embracing new technologies helps us work smarter and streamline our daily operations. dBD provides a safe solution for our headset activities, and our team enjoys working with their product. The future is ahead of us — and with this, we’ve taken a few steps closer to it.”
Minerva Momentary: Designed for Demanding Airside Environments
The Minerva Momentary system provides robust wireless duplex communications, engineered specifically for aviation ground operations. It enhances clarity between ground teams and flight crews during pushback, wing walks, and inspections, even in busy or acoustically challenging environments.
Used in both single and dual-operator configurations, Minerva offers flexibility for differing operational needs. In two-person scenarios, visual hand signals remain in use between the headset operator and tug driver, while voice comms with the flight deck are maintained via the momentary microphone button — striking a balance between traditional procedures and modern communication capabilities.
The system also supports splitter cables, enabling 2 or 3-way communication, ideal for wing walking, towing, or live training with multiple operatives connected at once.
Rebuilding Momentum Across Europe
In parallel with the Menzies development, dBD Communications has also reengaged with EasyJet, supporting their fleet at London Gatwick. We initially delivered Minerva VOX systems in March 2020, just before the global lockdown. As EasyJet and their service partners emerged from the pandemic, dBD returned to fully service and refurbish the equipment, ensuring operational readiness as flight schedules resumed.
Minerva VOX offers voice-activated wireless communication, allowing team members to transmit hands-free as soon as they speak — an ideal solution for fast-paced ramp environments.
At Gatwick, the equipment originally purchased by EasyJet is now actively utilised by DHL, supporting their operational teams during pushback procedures.
This renewed engagement underscores our commitment to building long-term relationships, not just delivering products. From first-time deployment to post-pandemic servicing, we continue to support teams on the ground with dependable, intuitive communication solutions.
