NATS - Air Traffic Control Services

Company NATS
Date 12.01.2011

The effect of the severe winter weather and the ash cloud contributed to a 4.3 per cent decrease in the number of aircraft in UK controlled airspace last year.

For the calendar year 2010, 2,106,689 aeroplanes were managed by NATS controllers, compared to 2,200,326 for 2009. For December, flights were reduced by 6.6. per cent compared to the same month the previous year.

The reduction can be attributed in part to the impact of the freezing spells in November and December – both in the UK and abroad – and the volcanic ash cloud in April and May.

Of all market sectors, only transatlantic overflights posted positive growth over the course of the year with an increase of 0.1 per cent.
