New Istanbul Airport - A project close to HAURATON’s heart!

Construction began in May 2015, with commercial flight operations starting four years later on the 6th April 2019.

At one stage the largest construction site in Europe.

In 2023, New Istanbul Airport served more than 76 million passengers, making it the second busiest airport in Europe, after Heathrow Airport (UK). The plan is for 200 million passengers.

So why close to HAURATON’s heart?

* Nearly 24 km of RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel (F 900) by HAURATON has been installed in all airside locations, including aprons, taxiways, runways and around the main terminal building, making this one of the largest single projects supplied by HAURATON.

* HAURATON worked closely with iGA (Istanbul Grand Airport), the airport infrastructure contractor established in October 2017 to build and operate Istanbul’s new airport for 25 years. iGA is formed as a joint venture between Kalyon Havacılık ve İnşaat A.Ş. (55%) and Cengiz İnşaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. (45%).

* The main period of supply ran from May 2017 – May 2018, with additional requirements in 2021 and 2022, as further expansion took place.

Why RECYFIX HICAP Slot Channel F 900 ?

* The major quantity of high-capacity slot channels installed was RECYFIX HICAP 10300 F 900, the largest capacity modular slot channel system available in the market. Large channels were required to provide both surface water drainage and water storage across the whole site.

* Manufactured from recycled Polypropylene, RECYFIX HICAP is fully corrosion resistant. The local environment is very corrosive. Slot channel systems made from thin-gauge ‘pre-galvanised’ steel sheet would quickly corrode.

* As iGA is managing the airport for 25 years, they required a system that provided a strong and durable installation (load rated F 900), which was low-maintenance and safe (with low FOD risk).
