Northwest runway out of service again

Update: Runway back in service (02.06.)

Since 8:11 p.m. on June 1, the north-west runway has been cleared for flight operations again. The reason for the increased tire wear was probably the new surface of the slope, which was still too rough and had very good braking values. Several rollers smoothed the slope all day yesterday. After another thorough test, Fraport AG traffic management released the runway at around 8:00 p.m. Landings continue to be closely monitored. The determination of the cause continues.

Original notice (06/01):

The north-west runway, which was reopened yesterday at 1.12 p.m., is currently not being used for landings until further notice. The background is reports from pilots about an increased accumulation of damaged tires after landing.

“The safety of passengers and employees is the top priority. All colleagues involved are working flat out to investigate the cause and solve the problem,” said a spokeswoman for Fraport AG.

Due to the current closure of the runway, there may be occasional delays in operations. Passengers are asked to allow sufficient time for their arrival and to be at the check-in desk as early as possible before departure. In addition, travelers should check the flight status in advance on the websites of the booked airlines.

Air travelers can find information about departures on the websites of their respective airlines or on 01806-FRAINFO (01806-3724636 – landline price €0.20/call / maximum 60 cents per call from a mobile network) and atwww.frankfurt-airport.com .

Background: Airport operator Fraport carried out necessary maintenance measures on the Northwest runway from May 16th to 31st. A new “anti-skid surface” is to provide more grip on the 2,800-meter-long track.
