During the aviation industry’s exhibition ATC Global being held in Amsterdam, LFV was awarded the prize for innovation for the remote towers initiative within the framework of the European development project SESAR. Preparations are already underway in Sundsvall to accommodate remote air traffic control at Örnsköldsvik Airport.

“LFV’s task is to ensure that people can travel safely and securely in Swedish airspace. This award shows that we are at the leading edge of technology. Remote towers is also in line with the government’s intentions that LFV shall promote research, development and the introduction of new air navigation technology,”says Thomas Allard, director general at LFV.

Last year LFV was also awarded a prize at ATC Global for the remote towers concept. The project is being run by LFV in cooperation with Saab and air navigation services in Norway, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Denmark and Austria as well as the airport enterprise Swedavia.

“This is the most developed project in Europe; one which is the brink of realisation within the framework of SESAR. The project is on schedule, delivers measurable results and has been documented in such a way that makes it accessible to different aviation safety authorities,” observes Patric Ky, director for SESAR JU.

Thanks to remote towers, air navigation services can be provided from a distance. It facilitates cost- efficient air traffic control services in remote areas with lower population densities. Rather than having numerous control towers manned, personnel resources are redistributed to a central location. Last spring LFV and Airservices Australia signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop the remote tower concept in Australia with Saab.

SESAR is a European development project involved in increasing airspace capacity and reducing costs for air navigation services.
