The Swedish Transport Agency has granted LFV permission to permanently adopt Free Route Airspace Sweden from 14 November 2013. Free Route Airspace Sweden, otherwise known as FRAS involves both time-savings and environmental gains.

Thanks to modern navigation technology we can offer airlines and passengers the most effective flight possible,? says Anders Jernberg, Manager for En route within LFV Production.

In a nutshell, Free Route Airspace means that an aircraft equipped with the appropriate instruments is no longer dependent on navigation aids on the ground but can instead, using GPS technology, fly the shortest route in Swedish airspace.

Free Route Airspace was introduced in the entire Swedish/Danish airspace during 2011, and the approval from the Swedish Transport Agency provides confirmation of a well-proven and functioning method. A reduction in carbon emissions of 52 000 ton per year is expected. This method can be utilised for flights which are planned over the 9000 metre mark.

LFV and the Danish air navigation service provider Naviair have since 1 July 2012 been providing joint air traffic control services in Danish/Swedish airspace.

Footnote: En route is defined by flights at cruising altitude between two airports.
