The VINGA project which LFV leads at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport is an important part of LFV’s long-term and consistent environmental work. Through developing new techniques for inbound and outbound flights from airports as well as en route traffic, LFV is continually taking steps towards a more sustainable aviation industry.

“LFV is at the leading-edge in terms of environmentally-adapted aviation technology and we are pleased to be able to offer airlines this possibility in cooperation with the airports,” says LFV’s Director General Thomas Allard.

The goal-oriented development towards greener flights demands a close collaboration between the aviation industry’s participants and stakeholders, even if the majority of the work involves air traffic control.
“Close cooperation with the airport is a crucial prerequisite for our work. The airport, with its link to environmental legislation, is the primary actor in the move towards change in terms of how we handle air traffic in the proximity of the airports,” says Thomas Allard.

The VINGA project is run by Gothenburg Landvetter Airport however it will be transferable to other airports in the future.
“The concept and experiences are of considerable interest for an airport such as Stockholm Arlanda which is also developing solutions of the future. VINGA is partly financed by the EU development project SESAR which aims to increase the capacity of European airspace in tandem with a decrease in the environmental impact of aviation. The VINGA project is in line with these goals,” adds Thomas Allard.

Another example of LFV’s environmental work consists of direct flight routes, namely Free Route Airspace Sweden, FRAS. For a year now, airlines have been able to select the shortest possible route between two airports through Swedish airspace when arriving at cruising altitude of over 9000 metres. The shorter flight routes are made possible by modern air traffic control systems at LFV combined with advanced route planning tools at the airline.
