LFV has worked with Saab for many years to develop technical systems for air traffic management. The goal is to improve security, increase capacity and at the same time produce a more efficient service for airports.
Now Saab's r-TWR system, located at the airport in Sundsvall, has undergone tests and passed LFV's controls. This allows the Swedish Transport Authority’s certification process for LFV's Remote Tower Services to begin. The goal is a full, operational certification later this year.
“This is a brand new, cutting-edge technology for the industry. Remote Tower Services allows us to safely deliver services while reducing costs for our customers,” says Pia Johansson, Marketing Manager for LFV Tower and Approach Control.
The system uses a number of cameras, audio and other sensors to give a continuous, comprehensive picture of an airport. This information and data is fed into a central (Remote Tower Center) where the video is streamed directly to a controller and projected onto multiple LCD screens. The controller has full control over all sensors with integrated flight information, airport equipment, electronic "strips" and other aids.
“We are compiling new methods and regulatory frameworks for the air traffic controllers who work with LFV Remote Tower Services. The idea is that a number of airports and air traffic control, takeoffs and landings, are controlled from one location at a distance," said Johansson.
“Having passed the LFV's Site Acceptance Testing is a major step forward for an acceptance of this new way of directing air traffic. We have carried this out in close cooperation between Saab and LFV,” says Ken Kaminski, senior vice president of Saab.
