About Munich Airport
Number 6 among Europe´s top ten airports
Founded in 1949, FMG has three shareholders: the Free State of Bavaria (51 percent), the Federal Republic of Germany (26 percent) and the City of Munich (23 percent). With a total of 38 million passengers and some 410,000 flights in 2011, Munich maintained its number six ranking among Europe's top ten airports. Last year the FMG Group, with its 14 subsidiaries, had total revenues of about 1.2 billion euros.
High-performance distribution node
The most important growth engine for Munich Airport is the hub traffic of Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. These airlines in particular have played a decisive role in increasing the number of transit passengers using Munich Airport. They now account for 37 percent of total traffic. The foundation for the dynamic growth in hub traffic at Munich Airport was laid by the steady development of the route network in recent years. Today more European cities are served from Munich than from any other airport, and the number of long-haul destinations is also constantly increasing.
Excellent quality of passenger experience
Travelers from all over the world value the excellent quality of the passenger experience in Munich as well as the ease of making connections. This has been confirmed again and again in the annual surveys by Skytrax, the London-based aviation research institute, in which passengers regularly vote Munich one of the world's top ten passenger airports. On several different occasions – including the most recent survey in 2011 – Munich Airport has been voted number one in Central Europe.
Standards in non-aviation sector
Munich Airport also sets new standards in the non-aviation sector, which accounts for almost half of total revenues of the airport operating company: With more than 200 businesses and a total of 35,000 square meters of space, the airport has an excellent range of shops and hospitality offerings, both in terms of quality and quantity. In addition, Munich Airport is the site of the world's only brewery in an airport.
