The project's key players and their needs

The Cypriot government awarded the construction and operation of the international airports in Larnaka and Paphos to the HERMES consortium for the next 25 years.

The contract for the two airports principally includes the following:

  • The construction of new terminal buildings and control towers.
  • The extension of the runways.
  • The reconversion of the existing Larnaka terminal into a freight terminal.

In the framework of the construction of the new Larnaka terminal (which will welcome 7.5 million passengers in 2009) CIAT participated in the development of innovative technical solutions for the different companies involved:

  • EGISAVIA (Ex- SOFREAVIA), which wrote the call for tender in accordance with the needs of the Cypriot government.
  • HERMES, responsible for the construction of the terminal: Bouygues and its UK design studies partner DSA.
  • AXIMA responsible for the installation of the HVAC work section.

High Environmental Quality was one of the core concerns of the project. The environment, energy efficiency, air quality and passenger comfort were therefore central aspects in the selection of materials, equipment and technical solutions.

The CIAT solution

CIAT's centralised solution for air conditioning in terminals as well as parked aircraft met all their specific needs.

Indeed, to reduce the electrical power consumption of the installation, the chillers were coupled with CRISTOPIA cold storage units, exclusive to CIAT.

With a view to significantly reducing the pollution generated by the use of auxiliary power units (APU) for parked aircraft, an air conditioning system (PCA) was installed on the plane footbridges. Furthermore, the operation of the CIAT Airports system (Chiller + Cold storage + ACW PCA unit with a glycol-water temperature of -7/15°C) is optimised by the "CRISTO Control" regulation system developed by CRISTOPIA.

The quality of the air inside the airports is managed by air handling units, as well as terminal units for the offices, shops and restaurants.

The global solution proposed by CIAT is in accordance with the needs of the contract holder and compliant with the expectations of the Cypriot government:

  • Reduced electrical consumption and low maintenance costs.
  • Quick return on investment.
  • Guaranteed optimum comfort for all users.

The know-how of the CIAT Group, its presence on an international level, its product and market experts enabled CIAT to propose a tailor-made offer.
