An ambition of every marketer, ‘going viral’ refers to the sharing of a website link or video through social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, or by email or text message. In the same way as a YouTube share can create overnight celebrity, exemplified by Britain’s Got Talent contestant, Susan Boyle, the effectiveness of an advertising campaign can be increased exponentially through the network effect of the Internet. Essentially, the viral marketing process is a modern-day word-of-mouth: It’s also a way of taking your product to thousands, even millions of people, with a lower budget than traditional marketing techniques might require.

The numbers speak for themselves: Facebook currently has 1.66 billion mobile users. That’s 22% percent of the world population! Twitter has 317 million monthly users, and statistics from January 2016 showed Snapchat with 7 million video views per day compared to 8 million on Facebook.
