Welcoming a new aircraft is a piece of cake for Gate Gourmet Detroit. The unit catered a special event on Dec. 1 at the airport terminal when Royal Jordanian welcomed a 787 aircraft to Detroit from Amman, Jordan.

As part of welcoming the Royal Jordanian Dreamliner, Gate Gourmet presented the airline with a delicious cake. The cake’s design, which featured a stylized version of the 787 and flags of Jordan and the U.S., was highlighted as part of the press coverage of the event.

Chef Charles Parent of the Detroit kitchen oversaw preparations for the celebration and prepared many delicious trays of appetizers for the party.

Royal Jordanian operates its Amman-Detroit flight twice weekly. The route makes a stop in Montreal during the winter months, and Royal Jordanian eliminates the Montreal stop and flies nonstop to Amman from both cities during the spring and summer schedule. Commenting on the arrival, Tom Naughton, CEO, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Authority, told CBS Detroit: “For Royal Jordanian to make this commitment and bring the 787-8 into Detroit is important. I think it says that Detroit is important to them and certainly they are important to us. (The Middle East and Amman, Jordan) is an important market for this region. We are constantly looking at ways to grow that service out of Detroit.”

Royal Jordanian’s fleet now has five Dreamliners, which the airline is using to replace older Airbus 340s and Airbus 330s, USA Today reported. The carrier has plans to take another six Dreamliners beginning in 2016. The airline’s 787s are configured with 271 seats, including 24 seats in “Crown Class” and 247 in coach.

Detroit is not the first U.S. Dreamliner route for Royal Jordanian. The airline began using its 787s for its Amman-Chicago flights on Nov. 30 and for its Amman-New York flights on Nov. 8, USA Today reported.
