Schwarzmann Completes Slovenia's Largest MRO Hangar at Ljubljana Airport for Solinair

Company Schwarzmann
Date 02.06.2026

Schwarzmann, a specialist in the design and construction of large-span steel structures for the aviation sector, has successfully completed the new aircraft maintenance hangar for Solinair at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJLJ/BRK). The facility received its occupancy permit in April 2026, significantly expanding Solinair’s MRO infrastructure and reinforcing Schwarzmann’s position as a leading contractor for aviation-grade maintenance facilities in Central Europe.

The completed hangar is the largest aircraft maintenance facility in Slovenia, purpose-designed to support Solinair’s full spectrum of maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations. The structure covers a footprint of 47.7 m × 68.7 m with a clear interior height of 19 metres and a total building height of 24 metres, allowing simultaneous servicing of multiple narrowbody aircraft types.

The facility is functionally divided into two integrated zones. The southern section provides a column-free maintenance bay optimised for unobstructed aircraft access, while the northern annex houses dedicated workshops, parts storage, technician facilities, and administrative offices — everything required to sustain efficient, continuous MRO workflows under one roof.

Schwarzmann’s scope of work encompassed structural design, in-house steel fabrication, on-site assembly, roof and façade installation, and the supply of specialised hangar doors. The primary load-bearing structure comprises 570 tonnes of steel with 10,630 individual components. The main roof girders — 4.7 metres in height and weighing up to 19.5 tonnes each — required segmented transport and controlled on-site assembly, with a trial lift performed at Schwarzmann’s production facility to verify structural performance against design models prior to installation.

A 40-metre clear-span door opening provides fully unobstructed aircraft entry and exit, a critical operational requirement for any MRO facility. The entire project was executed within the active airside security perimeter of an international airport, requiring strict compliance with access protocols and crane height restrictions throughout construction.

A distinguishing feature of the structural concept is its built-in scalability. The hangar was engineered from the outset for a future 24-metre extension, bringing the total width to 72 metres without modifications to the existing frame — reflecting Schwarzmann’s standard approach of designing aviation structures for long-term operational growth.

Construction commenced in July 2025 and was completed in December 2025. The Solinair project demonstrates Schwarzmann’s fully integrated delivery model — from structural concept and detailed engineering through in-house fabrication to on-site execution — ensuring technical consistency, schedule control, and single-point accountability across the entire project lifecycle.
