All Airports and Cargo/Mail companies throughout the EU will soon be required to provide records of their screener’s T.I.P. (Threat Image Projection) results to their local governing bodies.
Screeners that have not been tested on 80 T.I.P. images within 4 months or have not correctly identified 75% of the virtual images will need to undergo adaptive training to improve their weaknesses.
What is T.I.P.?
T.I.P projects images from a library of threats onto random bags and containers passing through CBS, HBS and Cargo/Mail x-ray machines. It is used to routinely test the ability of screeners to detect weapons and explosives while on the job.
T.I.P. is available with all major x-ray machine manufacturers; however, extracting the results into meaningful reports requires hiring an analyst.
Changes to Regulations on the use of Threat Image Projection
Evaluation of TIP performance of individual screeners shall be carried out every 4 months. If during this period the screener was not subjected to at least 80 TIP images, the evaluation period shall be extended until 80 images are projected.
A screener shall at least identify 75% of the virtual images projected to him while generating less than 25% false alarms.
Screeners who have failed the 4 month TIP evaluation shall undergo training adapted to their weaknesses revealed by the evaluation, followed by a standardised image interpretation test. The re-training shall be satisfactorily completed before the end of the following evaluation period.

Simfox – X-Ray Simulator Training using T.I.P. Images
Simfox is an EC 185/210 compliant security x-ray simulator. It delivers training at all levels for all major single and multi view x-ray machines including Smiths-Heimann, Rapiscan, L3 and Gilardoni.
