Serco - non-government provider of air traffic services

Company Serco Group
Date 15.07.2010

Serco Group plc (Serco) has signed a new contract with the Ministry of Defence to deliver essential support services at RAF Brize Norton, one of the MoD's most important bases involved in current military operations, worth around £36m for a period of up to 6 years.

RAF Brize Norton is the main gateway for British military personnel deploying to and returning from overseas operations, and Serco has supported the RAF mission at the Station since 1997.

This new contract reinforces our existing role in delivering operational support services, ranging from aircraft engineering to managing air movements and providing the station's security, at the RAF's key air transport and air-to-air refuelling base.

Serco's experience and track record in delivering value for money services will be critical in ensuring stability and minimising operational risk during a long period of major change at the base. The 'Future Brize' programme is set to deliver enormous structural change on the Station, involving significant numbers of aircraft, people and support functions involved in air transport and air-to-air refuelling converging on Brize Norton from other stations.  A concentrated period of construction and redevelopment is now underway in preparation for these changes.

Commenting on this recent success, Andrew White, Chief Executive of Serco's Defence, Science and Nuclear business, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for us to further demonstrate our commitment to enabling affordable defence capability and support to the armed forces. It's clear that service continuity will be vital during this period of change at the Station, and our team of dedicated professionals will be focussed on providing just that."

Nigel Eadon-Clarke, Head of the Ministry of Defence Air Commercial Team (ACT) responsible for placing the Contract said: "The signing of this contract remains significantly important in terms of supporting operations at RAF Brize Norton and we look forward to developing our commercial partnering principles with Serco during the period of change at the Station".

Group Captain Dom Stamp – the Station Commander said:" I am extremely pleased that Serco has signed a new contract with the Ministry of Defence to deliver essential support services at RAF Brize Norton. The Station is set to undergo significant change over the next few years: mainly arising from the integration of force elements from RAF Lyneham, and Serco's experience and knowledge of procedures here at RAF Brize Norton will ensure an excellent degree of continuity for the exciting times ahead".

RAF Brize Norton is the largest Station in the Royal Air Force, employing some 3900 Service personnel and over 600 civilians.  Serco supports all aspects of the station's mission, including strategic air transport, air-to-air refuelling and the movement of military and civilian personnel to Cyprus, the Arabian Gulf and Afghanistan.
