Smiths Detection today announces the market launch of HI-SCAN 6040aX, an advanced baggage scanner which has gained EU Liquid Explosive Detection Systems (LEDS) Standard 1 Type C approval.
Standard 1 Type C compliance means the X-ray system can be used to scan up to two liquid, aerosol or gel containers simultaneously in a tray at carry-on baggage checks with no need for the containers to be opened.
Stephen Phipson, CBE, President of Smiths Detection said: "This approval is another major success for Smiths Detection in the run-up to the phased lifting of the EU liquids ban from next April. Our aX systems give customers technological and performance headroom when deploying this Standard 1 equipment now. They can also use the upgrade kit to access advanced multi-purpose and multi-threat detection capabilities to become compliant with Standard 2 well beyond 2016 when that standard becomes mandatory."
HI-SCAN 6040aX is a dual-view X-ray system that can be upgraded to full explosives and liquids detection by integrating hardware and software components. Once upgraded, the aX system is identical to the renowned HI-SCAN 6040aTiX which is already EU Standard 2 Type C approved. Unlike conventional X-ray technology, aTiX systems capture multiple views of carry-on luggage in a single sweep. Using advanced software algorithms, they are able to alert the operator to potentially harmful items.
In the US, HI-SCAN 6040aTiX was among the first to be included on the TSA’s Qualified Technology List (QTL) for next generation Advanced Technology X-ray systems. TSA recently ordered Smiths Detection aTiX equipment for US airports valued at more than $43 million, part of a five-year, Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with a ceiling of $325 million.
