The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recently implemented security enhancements at airport screening checkpoints – with the roll out of Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, which enhance security levels and reduce the need for physical contact at the checkpoint. Leading global threat detection company Smiths Detection has already provided over 200 CT cabin baggage screenings systems (HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX) to TSA, out of the 300 systems on order.

Commenting on the roll-out and the benefits of CT scanning technology, Dr Michael Frunzi, Senior Business Development Manager for Smiths Detection, said:

Airport security can be a frustrating and anxiety-inducing experience for travellers – with the checkpoint often being a bottleneck in passenger journeys. This is especially the case when passenger volumes are high, as they are expected to be this summer.

CT scanners generate layered, rotatable 3D images, which are far more effective at finding threats than those from conventional x-ray scanners. This allows more accurate threat detection, reducing the need to search bag contents, thus minimizing unnecessary interaction. Passengers screened in security lanes equipped with CT scanners do not need to remove their travel-size liquids bag or electronics from carry-on luggage, significantly reducing the number of trays that need to be handled so passengers move through checkpoints much quicker.

With our CTiX scanners being installed at airports across the US, there is huge potential for airport security queues to be drastically cut. US airports with CT units will also be better equipped than ever to tackle evolving threats. It is not an exaggeration to say that CT scanning technology is revolutionizing checkpoint security.
