Ensuring cost efficient and effective maintenance, low maintenance headcount and improved the quality of service

Background

Extend 7000 went live in 2010 in Berlin’s Schönefeld and Tegel airports.

The system will also be live at Berlin Brandenburg International when the new airport opens its doors in June 2012. Prior to its operational launch, Extend 7000 is being used to optimise processes during the pre-launch commissioning phase starting in November 2011. It is being used by engineers supporting the Vanderlande baggage handling system operating on Simatic S7 and WinCC and to monitor medium voltage power supply (18 MW) at the airport.

Extend 7000 also dispatches messages from the central facilities management service desk (an SAP system) to field based maintenance staff. Further projects currently being evaluated include Apron lighting to improve troubleshooting, access to floor plans and documentation availability.

In total, Berlin’s airports run 100 different maintenance systems that could be integrated with the Extend 7000 mobile maintenance system to improve service delivery.

Results

Extend 7000 serves as a common gateway between local systems and the mobile workspace. It consolidates data from different systems into one common user interface on mobile devices. This ensures short training cycles for staff and more flexibility in organizing maintenance teams and backup scenarios.

Using Extend 7000 at Berlin’s airports has enabled the various maintenance teams to stay on top of their growing workload without the need to increase headcount. It saves time on a daily basis and improves the quality of service delivered to customers and passengers.
