JAKARTA/INDONESIA, May 2012 – A new Air Traffic Control backup system has successfully passed final acceptance at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and is planned for operation by July. The new PRISMA ATC system acts as a back-up system supporting the ageing ATC equipment on site, which has caused more than one failure and major delays in recent months. The new system will ensure improved stability, safety and efficiency of air traffic control services at the airport.

The introduction of the advanced ATC system is part of on-going efforts by the Indonesian Directorate General of Civil Aviation to improve the quality of air traffic services and air traffic management overall. Aviation, and especially Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the main hub for air traffic in Indonesia, plays an important role in the fast-growing Indonesian economy.

The Minister of Transport of the Republic of Indonesia E.E. Mangindaan said the installation of the full back-up ATS System demonstrated the government’s commitment to increase air safety in Indonesia and its continuing efforts to improve air navigation services in accordance with regulations, alongside the development of the aviation industry and the air transport user’s community.

Ichwanul Idrus, the Director of the Indonesian DGCA, explained that the system is designed as a full back-up of the ATS system at Jakarta Service Centre, which due to the obsolescence of the main ATS system will be operated as a primary system until the construction of the replacement system has been completed. Once the back-up system is fully operational, Indonesia will be ready for the implementation of the new ICAO flight plan formats in November 2012, making it the first ANSP in Indonesia and one of the first air traffic control centres in South East Asia to do so.

The new PRISMA system offers expanded capacity and the necessary growth potential to meet the increasing demands of ever rising traffic volumes. The system is equipped with the latest technology with pro-active controller support and safety-net functions that aid controllers in identifying potential hazards, improving air traffic safety.

PRISMA ATC system has been supplied by the leading ATC specialist COMSOFT, a company that focuses on the introduction of advanced solutions in the ATC market. The company has enjoyed a worldwide reputation in this market for over 20 years.
