Icelandic Air Navigation Service Provider ISAVIA selected COMSOFT to implement ADS-B network.

Following an intensive evaluation phase the German surveillance expert COMSOFT has been awarded the contract by ISAVIA for the supply and installation of Quadrant ADS-B sensors covering the whole of Iceland. COMSOFT and ISAVIA immediately performed the site visits, but current weather conditions forced the partners to postpone the Installations to spring 2012. Operational use is scheduled before the summer season starts.

Thorough evaluations give evidence that the new sensor network achieves coverage close to the vast size of the Reykjavik FIR, thanks to each station’s exceptional range exceeding 300 NM. The project was initially launched as a joint procurement of ADS-B stations for installation in Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands; with NAVIAIR acting as project manager for the installations in Greenland and the Faroes.

For internal reasons NAVIAIR later pulled out of the common procurement. This caused an unexpected delay and installations along the coast of the volcanic island had to be postponed. Eventually ISAVIA decided to continue the Icelandic part of the program and ultimately selected the bidder best complying with their challenging criteria.

The sub-polar oceanic climate with comparably high precipitation around the freezing point asks for a product of superior quality in order to brave the harsh environmental conditions. The outdoor version of the Quadrant ADS-B ground station has repeatedly proven its suitability for the extreme cold. The sensor also resists temperatures on the other end of the scale making it likewise suitable for the use in deserts.
