CANSO, the Global Voice of ATM, will outline a number of initiatives for improving runway safety at the upcoming ICAO Global Runway Safety Symposium  in Montreal, 24-26 May 2011.

In the first session of day one, CANSO Director General Graham Lake will join senior representatives from ACI, IATA, Eurocontrol, ENRI, and the FAA to provide a global view on the scope of the runway safety challenge. As well as providing the ANSP perspective, Mr Lake will give an overview of CANSO’s runway safety improvement initiatives. In the sessions that follow Mark DeNicuolo, CANSO Safety Programme Manager, and Stephen Angus, Chair of the Safety Standing Committee, will contribute their expertise on runway safety risk analysis and ATC’s role in preventing runway excursions.

CANSO Director General Graham Lake said: “The aviation community has identified the improvement of runway safety as a key priority, and CANSO’s Safety Standing Committee is already working to develop a range of tools that will help deliver measurable results. However, real progress relies on building trust and collaboration between all aviation stakeholders. The ICAO symposium provides an ideal opportunity to discuss the best ways forward and I look forward to a constructive debate.”

As a Gold Level Sponsor, CANSO will host the lunch on day one, when delegates will be invited to complete a safety questionnaire. CANSO will also run a booth during the event exhibition, providing delegates with more information about the association’s safety initiatives. These include the recently published Unstable Approaches ATC Considerations (1.77 MB), the CANSO Standard of Excellence for Safety Management Systems (1.75 MB), and the CANSO Safety Management System Implementation Guide (available to CANSO Members only).
