The first class choice for accessing concealed services in airports

Company Howe Green
Date 23.07.2018

Tried and tested in airports across the world, the 1050 Series Heavy-Duty Floor Access Covers from Howe Green was a natural choice for accessing essential building services in the largest free-standing structure in the UK – Heathrow Terminal 5 (T5).

270 million customers had used T5 by the end of 2017, with an average of 90,000 customers per day passing through the terminal. T5 remains the busiest terminal at Heathrow. In the last decade over 1.9 million flights have been processed to 115 destinations.

Designed by architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners for client BAA, T5 opened for business in March 2008. The new terminal was designed to combine functionality with aesthetics. The passenger experience and journey through the buildings were at the forefront of design, while consideration was also given to architectural merit, environmental issues and maintainability.

The vast building houses a diverse range of building services, from water and waste to electrical and communications and heating, cooling and lighting. In order to provide access to these services, many of which are located under the building’s floor, a range of access panels from Howe Green were specified.

Throughout the project, Howe Green worked with specialist flooring contractor Vetter UK, part of the Laing O’Rourke Group. For the Interchange Plaza, a public area between the car park and the main terminal building, Howe Green supplied its 1050 range of external grade access panels. These were laid with Chinese granite paving.

Howe Green’s 1050 Series Heavy-Duty Floor Access Covers have been specifically designed to provide deeper capacity for thick floor finishes, such as external paving slabs, and to meet heavy-duty loading requirements.

Access to concealed services is safe and easy ensuring that should any maintenance be required, it will not be costly, time consuming and disruptive to remove the paving slabs.

Like all of the access covers produced by Howe Green the 1050 Series is manufactured to the exact size required for the project. The latest production technology and processes removes the normal cost implications associated with bespoke manufacturing. This ensures the access covers provide a perfect fit each and every time.

Featuring double seals to meet the highest standards of hygiene and security, the 1050 Series Heavy-Duty Floor Access Covers are corrosion and maintenance-free. The covers are designed to fit perfectly flush with their surround to avoid distortion and prevent any slips or trips, essential for heavily trafficked buildings such as T5.
