The two custom made PBBs (Passenger Boarding Bridges) delivered for the new Amiri Terminal in Kuwait were brought into operation last December during the GCC Summit held on 12th of that same month. All relevant personalities of the Gulf Countries arrived in Kuwait with their private aircraft, so they had the opportunity to use the ThyssenKrupp Elevator new concept of VIP Passenger Boarding Bridges.

By the beginning of the spring 2008 ThyssenKrupp Airport Systems S.A. was awarded with the contract for 2 PBBs for the AMIRI Terminal for the Kuwait International Airport.  This airport is located in Farwaniya, Kuwait. It can currently handle six million passengers a year after a massive renovation and expansion project in which ThyssenKrupp Elevator (ES/PBB) was involved.

The Amiri Terminal will be exclusively used by the Emir of Kuwait and all his guests, as well as other country representatives while visiting the country.

The most relevant aspects faced while developing this Project were:

  • Brand New design that consists on a minimal internal height (2,00 m-Interior tunnel), and a minimal internal width (2,40 m-Interior tunnel). This led to the design of the new PBB concept, with new structural profiles including new FEM calculations, as well as a required adaptation of the actual manufacturing facilities.
  • New raw materials.
  • A whole glazed PBB with the same colour of the terminal façade in order to maintain the PBB cooled even in the hottest of summers of Kuwait (around 50º C).
  • Adjustment of the Lay-out to serve the A380 in both decks, with the restrictions of the already planned terminal.

The main contractor of this Project, Ahmadiah Trading and Constructing Co., insisted on having a brand new PBB design. The client required an extra internal width and height, the latest state of the art Technology  however always maintaining the highest aesthetical concern.

Another important fact was the special logistic requirements of the project.  The objective was to transport high volume bulks –more than 4,00 m height-, and to adapt the engineering to the existing transport standards meeting the customer’s requirements and necessities.

To achieve this, an intercontinental combined transport Truck-Ship-Truck was used, always with maximum care of the equipment to avoid costly damages.

The Elevator Technology business area brings together the ThyssenKrupp Group’s global activities in passenger transportation systems. With some 42,500 employees and sales of 5.3 million euros in the fiscal year 2008/2009, ThyssenKrupp Elevator is one of the world’s leading elevator companies. Over 800 locations in more than 65 countries provide an extensive sales and service network to guarantee closeness to customers. The company’s portfolio includes passenger and freight elevators, escalators and moving walks, passenger boarding bridges, stair and platform lifts as well as quality service for all products.
