The recent opening of the 8,000 sq m Piazza del Lusso mall, featuring a number of the world’s leading retail names, is the latest development in the revamp at Malpensa’s Terminal 1. One of the first stores to receive the makeover during this airport-wide project, was this complete category solution which was unveiled last year and fully project managed from the UK office of Concourse Display Management. It’s a great example of the kind of improvements seen throughout Milan’s Malpensa airport.

The redesign reflects the prestige of the products on display as well as the expectations of the travellers themselves, who are increasingly from China, the US and Middle East. Ambient lighting and negative space clearly delineate the products being showcased and invite travellers to come in and browse the shop. Stand-alone displays highlight the premium and super-premium brands while menus guide customers through the selection process, echoing the personalised assisted-sales experience that’s always a feature with the most exclusive products.

Travel retail specialists, Concourse Display Management fully managed the implementation of this complex project, working with the design agencies of the various brands, the airport concession (Dufry), airport architects, as well as local manufacturers and installers, to bring the vision of all the brands involved into a physical reality.  As Concourse Display Management CEO, Rob Penn, explains, “a quick comparison of the pre- and post-revamp photos clearly demonstrates how the same products suddenly become so much more attractive and inviting given the right environment. This is especially important within duty-free given the very small window of opportunity to capture the attention of the busy, hassled traveller.”
